윈디시티 출신의 베이시스트 노선택은 2015년 5월 첫 번째 솔로앨범 “Low & Steady”를 발표한 이후, 지속적인 활동을 이어 나가기 위해 앨범에 참여한 뮤지션들 그리고 평소 좋은 관계를 맺고 있는 동료들과 의기투합하여 노선택과 소울소스(NST & the Soul Sauce)를 결성합니다. 노선택과 함께 윈디시티로 활동하던 이시문(기타)과 ‘와다다사운드’의 강택현(드럼), 레게 바이닐 스토어이자 레이블이며 극강의 셀렉타 크루를 이룬 ‘동양표준음향사’의 수장이자 '킹스턴 루디스카’ 멤버인 오청달(플루겔혼)과 동 레이블에서 프로듀서와 셀렉타를 맡고 있는 스마일리송(퍼커션& 멜로디카), 탁월한 감각으로 세션계의 뜨거운 활로 주목받고 있는 김바이올린(바이올린), '장기하와 얼굴들'에서 레게를 맡고 있는 이종민(키보드&트 롬본) 마지막으로 재즈계의 뜨거운 감자 김오키(색소폰)와 함께 8인조 밴드로 거듭나게 되었습니다.
단단한 한 덩어리 속의 조화로움을 추구하는 70년대 자메이카의 이나디야드(Inna de Yard) 분위기를 그대 로 살리기 위해 오랜 의견 조율 끝에 택한 접근 방식이며, 날로 차갑고 날카 로워져 가는 현 레코딩 방식에 대한 안티테제라고도 할 수 있습니다. 노선택과 소울소스는 카세트 테잎(Musicassette :MC)과 7인치 싱글 바이닐 이라는 아날로그 매체를 사용하기로 결정했습니다.
이번 7Inch 발매는 지난 3월에 발매된 카셋트테잎의 양면의 타이틀곡들을 수록한 싱글로 한국과 미국의 각 자메이칸뮤직 레이블 동양표준음향사Eastern Standard Sounds와 점프업레코즈Jump Up Records의 Co- Release로 북미와 유럽, 일본발매를 앞두고 있습니다.
노선택과 소울소스는 한국형 수퍼 레게그룹이라는 명성답게 단연 돋보이는 행보로 주목을 받으며 스카/레게 장르가 어느 나라보다도 큰 시장을 형성하고 있는 일본의 디스크 유니온에서 추천하는 올해의 한국앨범으로 선정되기도 했고 올해 20주년을 맞은 일본 최고의 페스티벌 후지락 페스티벌, 홍콩 인터네셔날 레게 스카 페스티벌의 헤드라이너로 초대받는 등 국내외의 다수 페스티벌에 초대되며 아시아에서 가장 주목할 밴드중 하나라는 평을 받고 있습니다.
또한 자메이칸 레전드 리코를 추모하는 의미로 함께 한 멕시코의 그래픽 아티스트 CHema Skandal 앨범의 아름다운 아트워크 역시 화제가 되며 각국의 리코 로드리게즈의 팬들과 그와 함께 했던 음악인에게 큰 반응을 일으키며 그의 앨범의 제작 코디네이션과 포토그래퍼를 담당했던 작가 Koichi Hanafusa의 '리코 로드리게즈Rico Rodriguez Exibition In Seoul'을 성사시키며 전시회의 연주를 맡을 예정에 있습니다.

Reggae music is a special thing. Reggae’s roots run deep and narrow in tiny Jamaica but her vines have twisted across the globe enchanting people without regard of history or culture. Seoul, South Korea has long incubated a small pocket of the global scene. The musicians here don’t get much buzz outside of east Asia, which is a shame. However, after listening to the debut album from NST and the Soul Sauce, a Korean-reggae “supergroup” if there ever was one, it’s clear this small scene may soon be making a big splash.
The group first formed in early 2015 as session support for frontman and bassist Noh Seon Teck’s solo project. The band has decades of total experience playing reggae in Korea and touring around Asia. After finishing up, they figured they had a good thing going so NST and the Soul Sauce was born.
NST and the Soul Sauce manage to cram a lot of musical style and swagger into little more than 30 minutes of music. Each track was recorded one take with no overdubs. This gives the album an authentic and natural vibe. There are no distracting post production effects… just good music, executed well.
The seven track album has a tasty sampling of jammy reggae jazz, dubs, phrenetic live cuts and catchy hooks. The first song, Heaven is Here, lays down a happy, lazy groove. The first few seconds sound very much like Lee Perry’s Upsetters: the sound is full and the instrumentation is just right. Following close behind is the dub version by Smiley Song
After that is a psychedelic jam inspired by an old Korean pop song called Doo Man River. The bass line drives this bus and everyone else in the band hangs on for dear life.
The next three tracks are various versions of one tune, Song for Rico. The vibe is straight off any album from the song’s namesake, Rico Rodriguez. It’s got the hook, the groove and the jazzy solos. This particular dub recorded with one take by Kang Teck Hyun, the band’s drummer.
The final (bonus) track is another jam called Highway Ram Jam. The star of this tune is Lee Jong Min on organ. It’s fun, bouncy reggae with a pop twist that morphs into a smooth lovers rock complete with violin serenade.

韓国のレゲエバンドWindy City出身のベーシスト、ノ・ソンテク(以下NST)は２０１５年５月、初のソロ・アルバム”Low & Steady”を発売したことをきっかけに、アルバムに参加したアーティストや周りのアーティストを集め、NST ＆ The Soul Sauceを結成した。
NSTと一緒にWindy Cityで活動をしていたWadada SoundのTekHyun(ドラム)とShai(ギター)、レゲエ専門レコードストア＆レーベルである東洋標準音響社(Eastern Standard Sounds)のメンバーでSkaバンドKingston RudieskaのメンバーであるCheong Dahl(フリューゲルホルン)、同レーベルのメンバーでプロデューサーやセレクターを担当しているSmiley Song(パーカッション＆メロディカ)、卓越した感覚で沢山のセッションを重ねているKim Vionlin(ヴァイオリン)、Kiha & The Facesでお馴染みのJongmin Lee(キーボード＆トロンボーン)、そして今の韓国のジャズの世界では欠かせない男Oki Kim(サックス)、この８人が意気投合したことで今の編成になった。
新譜”Heaven is Here / Song for RICO”は２０１５年１１月ソウルの弘大にあるライブハウス”Strange Fruit”でワンテイクで録音された実況アルバムである。これはひとつの調和を追求する７０年代ジャマイカのInna De Yardの雰囲気を活かすために選んだ方式であり、現代の音に対するアンチテーゼでもある。どのメディアに収めるか音質や目的を検討したうえで、MC(Musicassette：MC)カセットテープと７インチのヴァイナル化することにした。
”Heaven is Here / Song for RICO”は７つの曲で構成されている。自然と自身に関する眼差しを描いた曲 Heaven is Hereと、The Soul Sauceが結成した頃に他界したジャマイカ出身の伝説的トロンボニストRico Rodriguezへのトリビュート・ソングである Song for RICO、この２つのタイトル曲以外にもキーボーディストJackie Mittooのカバー曲などの４つのライブ・ヴァージョンも収録されている。
このアルバムの見どころの一つはHeaven is Here / Song for RICOという２曲のDubwiseをしたVersionも収録されているところでもある。Heaven is HereはSmiley Songにより、Song for RICOはTekHyunによりDubwiseされ、その２人のミキシング・ヴァイブスを味わうことも一つの楽しみである。

이번 앨범, “Heaven is Here / Song for RICO”는 지난 2015년 11월 홍대의 라이브클럽 스트 레인지 프룻 (Strange Fruit)에서 원테이크로 녹음된 라이브 실황입니다. 이는 한 덩어리로 뭉뚱그려진 조화로움을 추구하는 70년대 자메이카의 이나디야드 (Inna di Yard) 분위기를 그대로 살리기 위해 오랜 의견조율 끝에 택한 접근 방식이며, 날로 차갑고 날카로워져 가 는 현 레코딩 방식에 대한 안티테제라고도 할 수 있습니다. 때문에 앨범을 담을 매체를 고르는 것 역시 중요한 문제가 되었는데요, 노선택과 소울소스는 카세트 테잎(Musicassette :MC)과 7 인치 싱글 바이닐이라는 아날로그 매체를 사용하기로 결정했습니다.
“Heaven is Here / Song for RICO”는 총 7곡이 담겨 있습니다. 자연과 자신에 대한 따뜻한 시선과 성찰을 담은 곡 Heaven is Here과 노선택과 소울 소스가 결성될 즈음인 2015년 타계한 자메이카 출신의 전설적인 트롬본 연주자 Rico rodriguez 에게 헌정하는 곡인 Song for Rico 두곡의 타이틀 이외에도 Low and Steady 수록곡인 두만강과 Song for Rico의 라이브 버전. 레게 오르간 연주 기법을 정립한 아티스트 Jackie Mittoo의 곡이 실려 있습니다.
특징적으로 타이틀 두 곡은 덥와이즈 (Dubwise)를 거친 버전 (Version : 버전이라는 단어와 뜻은 통하지만 여기선 덥와이징을 거친 B사이드 트랙을 가리키는 용어입니다.)을 수록하고 있습니다. 덥와이징이란 믹싱 콘솔을 악기 처럼 쓰는. 엔지니어가 아티스트의 영역에 들어가는 경계에 있는 과정을 말하며 이렇게 덥와이징을 거친 곡은 DUB이라는 새로운 장르가 됩니다. Heaven is Here는 스마일리, Song for RICO는 강택현이 덥와이징을 맡았으며 그 둘의 서로 다른 믹싱 스타일을 맛 보는 것도 하나의 즐거움이 될 것입니다.
2016년 3월에 “동양표준음향사”를 통해 먼저 카세트 테잎으로 발매 예정이며 여름에는 7인치 바이닐로 발매됩니다. 이미 유튜브에 선 공개된 영상을 통해 멤버들의 실력을 주목 받아 해외의 여러 레이블에서 선주문 러브콜을 받고 있으며 앨범의 아트웍 역시 스카 / 레게 씬에서 많은 작업을 해 오고 있는 디자이너 CHema Skandal이 자진해서 맡아주기로 하는 등 많은 기대를 모으고 있습니다.
