NST & The Soul Sauce’s second full-length album “Version” has come out. It’s a collaboration with Kim Yulhee, a well-known sorikkun in the traditional Korean music scene and overseas as well due to her work with ECM Records. Four out of 12 chapters of pansori are put to a modern reggae/dub soundscape, providing a modern sound to traditional Korean folk music.

Established in 2016, NST & The Soul Sauce is Korea’s representative reggae band, and their sentiments and attitudes are based on Korean tastes and style mixed with the color of reggae/dub, soul, jazz, and psychedelic. They debuted with EP “Heaven is Here/Song for Rico” (2016) and were invited to leading overseas festivals such as Fuji Rock Festival (Japan), Hong Kong Int’l Reggae Ska Festival, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (USA), Circulart (Colombia), and En Orbita (Chile) where they were well-received. They were invited as guests on Bob Marley’s producer and legendary reggae icon Lee “Scratch” Perry’s US Tour, garnering attention and fame in Korea and beyond.

Their new record [NST & The Soul Sauce meets Kim Yulhee – Version] has been released by Eastern Standard Sounds on March 6, 2019. Leading Japanese engineer Naoyuki Uchida (内田直之) who worked with the group on “Back When Tigers Smoked” (2017) joins them again to create a balanced analog and digital dub mix, and Ryan Smith from Sterling Sound (NYC) who worked with Paul McCartney and Adele improved the quality of sound by helping with the mastering.

roots-music group that warms your heart and makes your soul dance.
Their unique sound has elements of reggae/dub, jazz, afrobeat, funk, soul,
psychedelic blended with deep rooted Korean traditional sound. In 2017, NST & The Soul Sauce joined forces with a multiaward winning Korean pansori vocalist Kim Yulhee to create one of the most unique cross-genre mashup tunes that has never been heard before. The most unexpected yet quavering,
powerful spiritual sound of reggae and pansori will explode, dance and melt in
your ear and heart.

“노선택과 소울소스 그리고 소리꾼 김율희가 함께 전하는 지금, 여기, 우리의 버젼 Version”

노선택과 소울소스가 두번째 정규앨범 “Version”을 발표한다. 전통음악씬 뿐만 아니라 세계적으로도 주목받고 있는 소리꾼 ‘김율희’와의 협업을 통해 탄생된 이 앨범은 판소리 12대목 중 4개 대목을 현대적인 레게/덥의 사운드스케잎으로 풀어낸 작품으로 한국 토속음악의 현대화된 사운드를 제시하는 작품이다.

한국의 맛과 멋을 바탕으로 한 정서와 태도를 레게/덥, 소울, 재즈, 싸이키델릭의 색채로 펼쳐내는 한국의 대표 레게밴드 노선택과 소울소스. 2016년 결성, Heaven is Here/ Song for Rico (EP)로 데뷔한 이래 일본의 후지락 페스티발(FRF), 홍콩 레게스카 페스티발(HKIRSF), 미국 시에라 네바다 월드뮤직 페스티발(SNWMF), 콜롬비아 서큘아트(CirculArt), 칠레 엔오르비타(En Orbita) 등 해외 유수의 페스티발에 연이어 초청되어 큰 호평을 받았다. 특히 밥 말리의 프로듀서이자 레게 음악의 레전더리 아이콘으로 현재도 왕성하게 활동중인 리 페리(Lee “Scratch” Perry)의 미국투어에 게스트로 초대되는 등 이례적인 행보를 펼치며 국내외에 서 큰 주목을 받아왔다.

오는 2019년 3월 6일 동양표준음향사에서 발매되는 신작 [노선택과 소울소스 meets 김율희 – Version]은 2017년작 Back When Tigers Smoked(2017)에 이어 일본의 거장 엔지니어 우치다 나오유키(内田直之)가 다시 한번 참여해 아날로그와 디지털의 균형잡힌 덥 믹스를 구현하였고 폴 메카트니, 아델 등을 담당했던 뉴욕 스털링사운드의 라이언 스미스Ryan Smith가 마스터링과 바이닐 커팅에 참여, 사운드의 밀도를 높였다.

노선택과 소울소스, 김율희는 오는 3월 9일 토요일 오후 7시, 현대카드 언더스테이지에서 신작 Version의 발매기념 공연을 갖는다. 특히 현대카드 바이닐 앤 플라스틱에서 LP로 리이슈되는 노선택과 소울소스 첫 정규앨범 [Back When Tigers Smoked] 의 한정반이 당일 공개될 예정이다.
